Lethabo Africa is a dedicated physiotherapist with a passion for paediatric rehabilitation.
She graduated from the University of Pretoria in 2015 and began her career at FH Odendal Hospital, where she worked for six years. During her time at the hospital, she developed a programme to integrate children with neurological conditions into mainstream schools in the local municipality, showcasing her commitment to inclusive and community-based care.
Lethabo's experience in paediatric rehabilitation led her to pursue a Master's degree in Paediatric Neurological Physiotherapy at the University of Sefako Makgatho Health Science University (SMU), which she completed in 2022. Her research focused on the participation of children with cerebral palsy in educational, leisure and play activities, highlighting the importance of holistic approaches to rehabilitation. Her work was published in the African Journal of Disability and presented at a congress.
In addition to her academic pursuits, Lethabo has continued to develop her clinical skills. She completed basic and advanced paediatric Neurodevelopmental Therapy courses (NDT) in 2022 and 2023, respectively, further solidifying her expertise in paediatric neurological physiotherapy.
Lethabo is a highly skilled and dedicated physiotherapist with a passion for paediatric rehabilitation. Currently, she works in the paediatric intensive care unit (ICU), where she provides care to children with neurological conditions and burns, demonstrating her expertise in managing complex and critical cases. Lethabo also sees neurodiverse children at school, promoting inclusive practices and supporting their unique needs.
As a clinical supervisor, Lethabo plays a crucial role in shaping the next generation of physiotherapists. She collaborates with final-year students at the University of Pretoria and second- and third-year students at SMU, sharing her knowledge and expertise to assist them in developing their clinical skills. Her experience as an undergraduate lecturer at SMU has also enabled her to inspire and educate students, fostering an enthusiasm for paediatric physiotherapy.
Lethabo’s academic pursuits and clinical experience have equipped her for her current role as a PhD candidate in Paediatric Neurological Physiotherapy at UP. Her research focuses on advancing paediatric rehabilitation and promoting the participation of children with cerebral palsy in physical, educational and play activities.
Through her work, Lethabo aspires to make a significant impact on the lives of children with neurological conditions and contribute to the development of inclusive and supportive practices in South Africa.
